Dorothy Mary McMurray was born on May 22, 1945 to Obie Earnest Richey and Barbara Ellen Franklin in El Reno, Oklahoma. After the passing of her mother at the young age of three years old, she went to live with her Great-Aunt and Uncle Charlie and Sallie Richey. Dorothy attended Booker T. Washington 1st-12th grade where she was involved in countless school activities, clubs, and programs. Graduating as valedictorian in the historically last segregated class of 1963. Dorothy then went on to attend Langston University where she joined the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
