Her mother contracted Scarlett Fever while pregnant with Fern. Fern, therefore, was born with the Scarlett Fever and her mother died 5 days later of the same disease. She lived for the first two years of her young life with her grandmother Priscilla Baker before being ordered by the courts to give Fern over her father who then moved to Ordway, Colorado. She then was given to her grandparents Walter and Nora Logan, to raise. After the death of her beloved grandparents she went back to live with her father who gave her to various friends and neighbors to raise. At about the age of 15, her grandmother in Missouri sent two of her sons to Colorado to pick Fern up and bring back to Missouri. She lived there until she graduated from Lafayette High School in St. Joseph, Missouri and moved to Pueblo, Colorado where she met her future husband, Albert “John” Dunlap.
Fern and John were married September 4, 1947 in Pueblo, Colorado. This was Fern’s 22nd home at the age of 23. To this union were born two daughters, Shelia and Jennifer. The bright spots of her life were her children who she saw get blue ribbons and Championships ribbons at the 4-H Fairs and State Fairs for their exhibits. She took great pride in her daughter Jennifer as she saw her become saddle club queen for various saddle clubs in and around Pueblo County and then watch her run for Miss Rodeo Colorado. Fern and John enjoyed going to the club event to watch Jennifer compete and they even competed themselves, once in awhile.
Fern was an avid gardener where she would not only plant, but harvest, and preserve 100’s of different kinds of delectable food items to see her family through some tough times. She also loved quilting where many people had been recipients’ of her loved tied up in her creations.
Fern was saved and baptized at the Temple Baptist Church in Pueblo, Colorado. She raised her daughters in the Baptist Faith and watch with pride as they were both saved and baptized.
John was a Mason and Fern an Eastern Star. They were both presidents of the Eagles Lodge in Pueblo. They were active in Masons, Eastern Star and Eagles Lodge. Fern and John were both rock hounds and enjoyed their many adventures in search of their many trinkets and treasures. Many of the unusual stones they found or bought at shows, John made into jewelry.
After John retired, they became “snowbirds” and bought a camper and wintered in Arizona where they were starting to enjoy their retirement and while there, they became friends with several Navajo Code Talkers and members of the Chimawavi Indian tribe. There were fortunate to have been invited to Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners with some their Indian friends and learn of their many ways and traditions.
Her daughters both went on to get married. To these marriages Fern has a son-in-law, Dana Reed, two grandsons, Daniel and Christopher and a granddaughter Terri Adams who recently married Tommy Davis.
