

John Sidney Shultz, (Uncle John) 80, passed away October 25th 2016. He was born on September 30th, 1936 in Johnstown, Colorado to Martin and Elva Shultz. John and his brother Dick were raised by their Grandma and Grandpa Shultz, and spent his youth in Johnstown schools participating in all High School sports excelling in track. Upon graduation from High School in 1954 he was offered a track scholarship to the University of Colorado (CU), which led to a lifelong commitment to the University and its activities; for which he was eventually inducted as a member to the CU track Hall of Fame. He interrupted his College career to spend2 years in the Marine Corp as a seagoing Marine, a service he cherished with a lifelong commitment.
In 1958 he married Carolyn Halker and returned to CU to obtain his undergraduate degree, later finishing his Master’s degree at Colorado State College in Greeley, CO. Thus began a 37 year career in his chosen profession of coaching, educating, and administration in Durango, CO, where he and Carolyn made many lifelong friends of his students. He was lured back to CU as an assistant track Coach for a short time and finally moved to Fountain, CO where he began a 30+ year career in the Fountain/Fort Carson El Paso County District #8 school system a teacher and Head Track Coach, winning numerous District titles. He then became a principal and retired in 1999.
John and Carolyn never had children of their own, but were 2nd parents to numerous nieces and nephews. Carolyn passed away in 1994 and in 2003 he married his current spouse Katie. John and Katie enjoyed the last 13 years golfing, traveling, summering in Colorado and wintering in Guadalajara, Mexico and Arizona meeting and making many new friends.
John was an avid golfer, dedicated Denver Broncos and Colorado Buffalo fan and supporter. Throughout his entire life John never knew a stranger creating many lifelong friends. He was always heard saying “AND WE GOT TO TALKING”. John was an extremely loving, caring, compassionate and giving person who always put other before himself.
John is preceded in death by his parents Martin and Elva, his brother Dick and is first wife Carolyn. He is survived by his spouse Katie Shultz, brother in law Neil(Dixie) Halker, sister in law Janet(Don) McCall and numerous nephews and nieces to which he was much more than just and Uncle.
Visitation will take place Friday, November 4, 2016, from 4:00-8:00 p.m., at Swan Law Funeral Directors. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 North Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. His burial will take place at Johnstown cemetery in Johnstown, Colorado at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution may be mad to your favorite military fund helping Disabled Veterans.
