

He graduated from Geneva High School in Illinois in 1955 and then attended Colorado College from 1955-1956. He joined the US Navy in 1956 and served the Navy until his retirement in 1975. He was stationed in Virginia, Rota Spain, Albany Georgia and Whidbey Island Washington. He returned to Colorado Springs, having fallen in love with the area during his year at Colorado College and resided here until his death. He attended Regis University and obtained a degree in Business. He worked at Heartland Payment Solutions as an electronics technician.
He married Shirley Drum on June 9th, 1990 and they shared 21 wonderful years together. He was very active at First United Methodist Church, serving as a Stephens Minister and also was very active in his Sunday school class. He loved to ride his bike around the trails in town, and even a bike accident a few years ago did not slow him down. He was an avid reader and always had a book in progress. He loved his Denver Broncos and even had the chance to attend his first live game in 2009 with his son-in-law Bernie. He will be missed by his cats Romeo and Sonny. He was very involved in his grandkids lives and was the ultimate soccer grandpa, attending most of his granddaughter Makenna’s competitive soccer games. He also loved to play board games with his family.
John was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Nancy Hall. He is survived by wife Shirley, daughter Lori (Bernie) Negron; daughter Lisa Thompson; stepdaughters Kimberly (Don) Blinn and Carolyn (Dale) Fuhrmann. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, who were the light of his life: Brendon Atkins, Benjamin Blinn, Dalton Fuhrmann, Makenna Fuhrmann, Garrett Fuhrmann, Anna Negron and Rose Negron. He is survived by 2 brothers, Bill Thompson and John (Nancy) Hunt. He is also survived by a sister Joanne (Don) Tharp. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews by marriage as well as many church family friends.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service is scheduled for Friday, July 8th at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs.
