

Kenneth “Ken” Andrew Mestas, age 60 of Raton, NM, passed peacefully on February 25, 2025 surrounded by those who loved him. Ken was born October 21, 1964 in Raton, NM to Pete “Sonny” Mestas and Rosalie Sandoval. He was the first of two children. Growing up in Starkville, CO, he loved to play in the surrounding hills, hunting, fishing and riding horses. He also enjoyed golfing and range shooting.
Ken graduated in 1983 from Trinidad High School. He was an Honor student and was on the wrestling team. Ken went on to graduate from Otero Jr. College with a degree as a Machinist.
Ken had the distinct honor of serving as a firefighter for the city of Raton for over 20 years. He held several ranks during his tenure including Battalion Chief and Deputy Chief. He also served as Emergency Manager for the city and surrounding communities. He wore a lot of different hats with pride and dignity in service to his community. Ken retired in 2011. He was a great friend and loved dearly by those who knew him well.
Ken leaves behind his beloved children Andrew Mestas of Raton, NM, Rachael Mestas of Colorado Springs and Michael (Janelle) Vigil-York of Colorado Springs. Mother, Rosalie Mestas of Trinidad, CO and sister Tracy (Silvano) Vigil of Pueblo West, CO. Granddaughter Ella Vigil-York. Niece/Nephew David and Brittany Gutierrez of Thornton, CO and great nephew Ezra Gutierrez. Numerous special cousins and friends. Special mention Dave and Virginia Martinez, Sheryl Mestas and Maria Baca.
Ken is preceded in death by his father Pete Mestas, grandparents Rachel and Andres Sandoval, grandson Kyng Vigil-York, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 22, 2025 at 1:00 p.m. at the Raton Convention Center, 901 S 3rd St, Raton, NM 87740.
