Leonard Siekmeier was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Leonard Sr. and Esther Siekmeier. He was one of six children. His early childhood and school years were spent in Aberdeen, South Dakota where he graduated from Central High School in 1941. He was an avid hunter from the age of ten.
He was in the U.S. Army for four years where he participated in the Ardennes, Central European and Rhineland Campaigns, during which time he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star. He also served as an officer in the 157th Infantry of the Colorado National Guard.
After his service, he attended and graduated from the University of Colorado. He had also taken courses at Washington and Jefferson College. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and BPOE.
In 1948 Leonard joined Colorado Pump and Supply Co. (presently named CPS Distributors Inc.). During this time, he obtained a Registered Professional Engineers License. He spent 40 enjoyable years working with his longtime friend and business partner, Judson “Jud” Manning, where, as Jud put it, “We had fun making a shoe out of a shoestring.”
Leonard considered the best day of his life February 4, 1950. That was the day he married his wife, Elizabeth “Libby” Darnell. Together they raised four children, Linda Ginsberg (Bill), Laurie Drost (Greg), Kurt Siekmeier (Susan) and Jeff Siekmeier (Donna). He was a grandfather to 8 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Leonard and Elizabeth were avid golfers and were past members of the Pinehurst Country Club, Cherry Hills Country Club, Briarwood Country Club (AZ) and Grand Lake Golf Club. They were most recently members of the Colorado Springs Country Club. They traveled extensively from Alaska to Central America as well as Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. They had lots of fun living in Denver and Grand Lake, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona. Libby preceded him in death on July 31, 2009.
Leonard is survived by sisters Mary Child and Ruth Presto. He was preceded in death by his sister, Janis Tiffany, and his brothers, Hugh Siekmeier and Don Siekmeier.
Leonard leaves with no regrets and hopes to be reunited with Libby.
