Russ was born at home in Adrian, MO to Daniel Shelton and Jennie Larned Shelton on January 20, 1922. He was the last of 7 children and was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Lillian Rose Shelton (Holloway) and his son, Richard Duane Shelton.
He is survived in death by his second wife, Betty Rae Shelton (Arnold), his daughter Diana Lynne Lantz, her husband Merle Lantz, daughter-in-law Sally Shelton (Dorris), grandchildren Noelle Lantz (Boker Wright), Travis Lantz, Jeremy Shelton and great-grandchildren Lillian Mae and Piper Lynn Wright.
Russ dedicated his life to the military, serving in Europe in World War II and then in the Korean conflict. After his retirement from active duty he served full time in the Army National Guard and was promoted to and finished his career as the Command Sergeant Major for the State of Colorado. During this time he was again activated and served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was one of the few remaining World War II veterans to whom we will all be eternally grateful for the sacrifice they made for our freedom. In total, Russ served 36 years in the military and retired completely in 1982.
Another very important part of Russ’s life was based on his involvement with the Elks Club, not only as an active member of almost 40 years but also related to his work with the Tremble Fund in helping people with special medical needs. Russ served in this capacity for almost 20 years, retiring only last July at the age of 91.
Russ was above all else a man of moral values from whom we learned much. He was a faithful member of Grace Presbyterian Church for many, many years and loved the Lord. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend and will be missed by all.
