Schra. On Saturday, April 9, 2022, Lois passed peacefully from her long-time home in Colorado
Springs to her eternal home in heaven. Though her lungs and body were weakened by
pulmonary fibrosis, Lois’ faith remained strong as she waited expectantly to be with Jesus.
Lois Meyering was born in Muskegon, Michigan on October 28, 1943, the third of four children
born to Egbert and Lucy (Wibalda) Meyering. Music was an important part of their family’s life,
and growing up Lois enjoyed singing in harmony with her three brothers, Ed, Jerry, and Dave,
with her mother at the piano. Lois became an excellent pianist, and later in life she was the one
at the piano when she and her brothers sang at family gatherings.
The Meyering family moved from Michigan to Denver after Lois’ junior year at Western Michigan
Christian High School. Moving to a new state and a new school for her senior year of high
school wasn’t easy, but Lois always said it was worth it because in her graduating class at
Denver Christian High School, Lois met Gail Schra.
Lois and Gail were married in Denver on June 23, 1967 and they enjoyed 44 years together
before Gail’s death in 2011. Through adoption, God brought two children, Jeffrey and Lisa, into
their family, and Lois said often that her children were her greatest blessings.
After graduating from Denver Christian High School, Lois earned her Bachelor’s degree in
Elementary Education from Calvin College. She taught in both Colorado and Oklahoma before
the US Army transferred Gail to Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington, where Lois was active in the
Officer’s Wives organization.
After completing Army service, Lois and Gail moved with their infant son, Jeffrey, to Colorado
Springs. Three years later, Lisa completed their family, and Lois focused on raising her young
children. When both kids were established in school, Lois returned to teaching and taught 3rd
grade for 25 years at Colorado Springs Christian School. She took pride in being an excellent
teacher.
Lois’ faith was at the center of her life, and she was a member of Cragmor Christian Reformed
Church for 50 years. She served the church in many ways, including teaching Sunday school
and serving as a deacon. After Gail’s death, Lois reached out to other widowed women in the
church and founded the Widow’s Support Group. The ladies of the “WSG” were dear friends to
Lois and they cared for each other well.
After her pulmonary fibrosis progressed, Lois expressed her desire to stay in her home–the
same one that she and Gail had bought when they came to Colorado Springs in 1972. Lois
loved to look out the windows of her sunroom at Pike’s Peak and to observe the birds that came
to her feeders. She and her family were grateful for the excellent care that she received from
Interim Hospice and especially for three special caregivers: Ronda, Carol, and Michelle. These
sisters in Christ clearly loved Lois and their care made it possible for her to remain in her home.
Lois was preceded in death by her husband Gail, her parents, her brothers Edgar and David
Meyering, her parents-in-law, and her brother-in-law Ken Schemper. She is survived by her son
Jeffrey Schra, Jeffrey's wife Lisa, and grandsons Willem and Xander; her daughter Lisa Esparza
and Lisa’s husband Rafael; her brother Gerald Meyering; her Meyering sisters-in-law Judy
Meyering and Gayle Arkema; and her Schra/Schemper in-laws Gaylyn and Steve Proctor, Barb
Schemper, Rich and Barb Schemper, Norene and Doug Van Andel, and Karen and Randy
Stephens.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 23 at 11:00am at Cragmor Christian Reformed
Church in Colorado Springs. There will be time to greet Lois’ family at the church beginning at
10am, and a light luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can
be made in support of the campaign to build a Performing Arts Center at Denver Christian
Schools. https://www.denverchristian.org/support/performing-arts-center/
