Loie was born in Evanston, Wyoming on September 13, 1937, the daughter of the late George and Myrtle (Seivert) Allard.
She is survived by her children, David Velasco (wife, Leslie), Stephen Velasco, M.D., and Ann Velasco (husband, Robert Wagner); grandsons, “DC” Velasco, Ryan Velasco, Daniel Wagner, and Luke Wagner; great-grandsons, Bodhi and JP; sister, Alice (Allard) Settle; and brother, William Allard. She was preceded in death by her sister, Rita Allard.
As a long-time resident of Colorado Springs (1991), Loie enjoyed the Colorado outdoors, entertaining, and visiting with friends. She was a devoted mom, daughter, sister, niece, aunt, friend, and grandma. She liked to get down in the dirt to play with her grandkids, with one grandson declaring her the “best truck player” ever. She climbed Pikes Peak on her 50th birthday; enjoyed ballroom and jazz dance; was a good bridge partner to have; enjoyed playing alto saxophone in the seniors band; and was a very loud whistler (used primarily to call the kids home for supper). She loved the outdoors, foreign travel, wearing pretty clothes and beautiful shoes, and pouring her heart into cooking meals (and desserts!) for family, friends, and strangers.
Loie was known, in particular, for her excellence as an RN scrub nurse (Penrose Hospital) and residential real estate agent (Moore and Company). She was a valedictorian graduate of Evanston High School, 1955, and received the Bishop Duane G. Hunt Award - Outstanding Nurse, Holy Cross Hospital School of Nursing. Loie was also active in numerous community programs, including grief support groups, suicide hotlines, and breast cancer fundraising.
The family would like to thank all of those who shared their time, love, and support for Loie during her prolonged illness.
Celebration of Life service for Lois Velasco will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Friday, June 10 at 10 am. A light luncheon and an ice cream social will follow until 12:30 pm, and a private family-only inurnment at Evergreen to follow.
