Born 18 March 1956 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mary was the beloved daughter of James Sutherland and Mary Loise (Campbell) Watt.
Mary’s first 13 years were spent in Chappaqua, New York where she attended The Robert E. Bell School, excelling at track and soccer, and the clarinet. Her family then moved to Boulder, Colorado where she enjoyed skiing and developed her lifelong love of all things equestrian. Mary attended Boulder High School and graduated from Chateau Brillant Mont High School in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1974. Mary was fluent in French.
Many of Mary's best memories were of summers and holidays visiting her Grandparents, Roy and Della Burghart at Eureka Farms in Greenville, Michigan; camping, fishing, riding and growing tomatoes with Roy in his greenhouse.
In 1979, Mary relocated from Colorado to Dallas, Texas to pursue a modelling career. Soon thereafter, Mary joined Southwest Airlines as a flight attendant. Mary married SWA Captain Jameson Titus Hannah in 1983. Her daughter Brittany Sutherland Hannah arrived in 1986. The family resided in Double Oak, a suburb of Dallas for many years.
In 1994, Mary graduated Magna Cum Laude from Texas Woman's University with a Bachelor of Science degree.
Mary took flying lessons. She enjoyed her many sole hours flying her Cherokee warrior, N8081P, around the country. She became a flight instructor, commercial pilot and finally Captain flying a SAAB 340 with Northwest Airlink. She also acquired a Boeing 737 Airline Transport Pilot Rating all while raising a beautiful daughter.
Upon her husband's retirement the family moved to Silver Creek, GA to be near Brittany, attending Berry College in Rome, GA. In retirement, Mary rode her horse, Chaucer, enjoyed geocaching, and golf as a member of Cherokee Golf Club in Cedartown, GA. Mary was a proud member of the Xavier Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Rome, GA. More accolades: Mary was an avid reader, traveler, and a great chef. Mary enjoyed card and dice games, such as Bingo, Canasta, and Gin, and she was the queen of the game Spite & Malice.
Mary is lovingly remembered by her husband of 42 years, Jameson Hannah, and her daughter, Brittany. As well as by her sister Cully Wheelock, and her brothers, Jamie, and Tom Watt as well as many extended family members and friends.
Mary’s grace, warmth, and love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her. Mary had a good soul.
A Celebration of Life will be attended by close friends and family members privately in Colorado Springs, in the near future.
