Mary Joy McMullen, 92, of Colorado Springs passed away on September 22 in Colorado Springs after a short battle with leukemia. Mary Joy was born on April 17, 1919 in Wilsey, Kansa to the late Erni Steimel and Irene Doherty. Mary Joy received her B.A. from Friends University and her M.A. from NYU. Mary Joy and Chester A. McMullen married on October 11, 1947. They raised six children together in Hutchinson, KS before moving to Colorado Springs in 1958. Mary Joy retired from the Pikes Peak Library District in 1981. Mary Joy enjoyed eating out, summer evenings on her patio, and needlepoint. Her family will cherish the hand stitched pillows that they received every Christmas.
Survived by children: Charlie and Cindy McMullen, Pat and Karin McMullen, Erni and Anne McMullen, Nancy (McMullen) and Jim Crossey, Donna McMullen, and Dan and Judi McMullen. Grandchildren: Shawn, Jaime, Duane, Jason, Jared, Jennifer, Brian, Erin, and L.J. Great-grandchildren: Alden, Autumn, Liam, Jeremy, Mackenzie, Sean, Keira, Nathaniel, and Tatjana. She held close to her heart cousins Pete and Anita Doherty and her niece Ann Miniscalo.
Preceded in death by husband Chester McMullen and grandson Jeremy McMullen, siblings Jacob Steimel, Dorothy Ann Thomas, and Reverend Charles Steimel.
A vigil and rosary will be held at Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Monday, Sept. 26 at 5:00 p.m., 3825 Airport Rd., Colorado Springs, CO 80910. A celebration of Mary Joy’s life will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 1:00 P.M.
Even though Mary Joy loved flowers, donations in Mary Joy’s name may be made to Pikes Peak Hospice, 825 E. Pikes Peak Ave., Suite 600, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. Internment to follow at Memorial Gardens Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
