

Col. Merle D. Bacon, PHD., “MD” as he liked to be called, died peacefully at home September 18th 2021. MD was born in Oklahoma in 1931 but raised in Kansas. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Wichita State University and both his Masters and PHD at the University of Oklahoma.
He had one son, Ric, deceased 2002, from his first marriage. He married Jan in 1990 and together they celebrated 31 years of marriage. During his Air Force career, his most enjoyable assignments were flying in 18 different aircraft. He was an instructor at The Air Force Academy in engineering mechanics and was commander of Seiler Research Laboratory, also at the Air Force Academy. He received 14 Medals, Citations and Campaign ribbons including the Legion of Merit and 4 medals from his time in Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller.
After he retired from the Air Force, he worked for the Bectel Corporation in Saudi Arabia as a supervisor in the building of the town of Jubal.
Coming home from overseas, he became an avid skier and golfer. He and Jan took 7 cruises and several overseas land tours. During his lifetime, he visited 49 countries.
He and his friend Gen. Phil Erdle founded International Education Foundation where he was the Executive Vice President until his final retirement.
He is survived by his wife Jan Bacon, daughter-in-law Karen Bacon, stepchildren Erin Fuller-Christian and Jeff Fuller. As well as grandchildren, Sarah Bacon, Shilo Christian, Breanna Christian, and Quinton Christian. In addition, two Great Grand babies, Addison Christian and Peyton Christian.
A memorial service and burial will be held at the Pikes Peak Veterans National Cemetery on October 13th @1:00 PM.
