Michael Gene Mong, 77, went to his rest quietly on 6 April 2010 in the company of his wife and family following a short illness. He was born on 23 September 1932 in Franklin, PA to Joseph and Emma Mong, who preceded him in death. He was a Korean War era US Army veteran, serving from 1953-1955, rising to the rank of Corporal. Michael married Diama Wheeling in 1953 and they enjoyed 57 very happy years together. Following his service to his country, Mike had a 40 year career with Joy Manufacturing, a mining machine manufacturing company, rising steadily from the shop floor to being the Director of Cost and General Accounting for the Colorado Springs branch (later Denver Equipment Co and Svedela), prior to his retirement in 1995. Mike and his family moved to Colorado Springs in 1972 and have resided here ever since.
Mike loved spending time with his precious family and a circle of great friends. He was a well known athlete in high school and he carried his love of sports throughout his life, playing softball and later tennis and he also loved fishing with his wife. He remained a lifelong Pittsburgh Steeler fan and became a great fan of Air Force football after he moved to Colorado Springs, holding season tickets for many years. Mike and his wife, Diama, loved to travel and spend time with the many friends they’ve made.
Michael Mong is survived by his wife of 57 years, Diama, two daughters, Margie Dewey and Melinda Houston, and a son Michael Mong, all of Colorado Springs. He is also survived by a brother Richard of Franklin, PA and a sister Josephine Perrine of Ocean City, NJ. He is also survived by 4 Grandchildren (Melinda and Eric Dewey of Fort Collins and Victoria and Erica Houston of Colorado Springs), and 3 Great Grandchildren.
Donations in Mike’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association in lieu of flowers. A public viewing will be held at Swan-Law Funeral Home, 501 N. Cascade Ave. from noon to 4pm on Saturday, April 10th. A memorial service will be held at the same location at 2pm on Sunday, 11 April.
