Mildred Joy Wind, age 102, died on Monday April 15, 2019 at The Life Care Center in Colorado Springs. From her birth in Havensville, Kansas on February 21, 1917 to her death on Monday, she brought love and joy to family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.
She was born on a Kansas farm to Arthur and Effie Venneberg, the fourth of eight children. After high school, she taught school for grades 1-8 in a one-room school house near where she grew up. She taught for a few years and then met her future husband, Frank Wind, on a summer vacation trip to Colorado in 1939. They were married on May 19, 1940.
Frank and Mildred settled in the Colorado Springs area and raised ten children. Those who knew and loved her will remember her for her faith in God, her love of family, and her joy in living. Her passionate interests included motherhood, fishing, gardening, the Colorado mountains, and watching the Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies.
Left to honor Mildred are seven of her children, Tom (Patti), Mary (Ken) Salisbury, Peggy (Dave) Farmer, Bob (Louise), Mike (Carolyn), Eileen (Richard) Izzo, and Elaine. Mildred also leaves 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a brother Clyde, a sister Mary, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Frank, her sons John, Tim, and Jim, her parents, her brothers Paul, Lowell, Claude, and Lloyd and her sister Elizabeth (Beth). She will be remembered for being the embodiment of motherhood, her kindness to everyone, and her optimistic approach to life.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the Swan Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery.
