Nicholas Alton Kempin, 35, passed away on June 28, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, of an unexpected pulmonary embolism. Born on May 3, 1990, in Omaha, Nebraska, Nick was the oldest son of Don and Susan Kempin of Westcliffe, Colorado.
Nick spent his formative years in Kansas, where he attended Olathe East High School. There, he served as president of the German Club and was an enthusiastic contributor to the school newspaper. He went on to attend the University of Kansas, where he became a proud Brother of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity—building lifelong friendships and deepening his love for learning, leadership, and community.
Known affectionately to some as “Big Nick,” he was instantly recognizable by his radiant smile, infectious laughter, and ability to light up any room. Whether he was sharing an obscure historical fact, reciting strange trivia, or simply offering his opinion—often passionately—Nick was always “holding court” among friends and family. A natural debater with a sharp wit, his parents often remarked that he missed his calling as a lawyer…but then again maybe a history teacher.
Nick leaves behind his loving parents, Don and Susan Kempin of Westcliffe, Colorado; his brothers, Parker Kempin of Washington, D.C., and Joseph Kempin of Chicago, Illinois; and his beloved grandmother, Donna Kempin of Overland Park, Kansas, along with many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Van Kempin, and Richard and Beverly Graves.
Nick cherished his role as a big brother to Parker and Joe. His absence will be deeply felt by all who knew him. His warmth, humor, and boundless curiosity enriched the lives of so many, and his memory will continue to inspire and uplift those he loved.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Nick’s honor to the Wayside Waifs, 3901 Martha Truman Road, Kansas City, MO 64137 —a reflection of his affection for his beloved cat, Ruth Bader Ginsburg (Ruthie), the Notorious RBG cat. To donate, click on the "Donations" link below.
A celebration of life will be held Tuesday, July 8th at 11:00 am in the Wesley Chapel at Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Avenue, Building C, Leawood KS. A brief reception will be offered afterwards.
