Major Robert E. Smalley, Retired, passed away September 21, 2013 in Colorado Springs. He was born March 26, 1921 in Arcadia, NB to Robert and Mary (Gartside) Smalley. He graduated from Flat Rock High School in Flat Rock, MI in 1941. He married Patricia Ann Smalley (Arndt) in Sioux City, IA April 27, 1957. He served in the United States Army Air Core and later the United States Air Force as a finance officer. He served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. He received the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Ribbon, Korean Ribbon, Joint Services Ribbon, Japan Ribbon, and the Commendation Ribbon. He retired after 25 years of service. Upon retiring he became an insurance claim adjuster.
He is survived by two daughters; Kimberly Lowry of O’fallon, IL and Kelly Kitch (Doug) of Colorado Springs, and five grandchildren; Daniel and Kaitlin Lowry, Kayla, Jordan, and Spencer Kitch.
Visitation for Major Smalley begins at 9:00am Monday, September 30, with the service to follow at 10:00 am and a reception following at 11:00. Burial will take place on Tuesday, October 1 at 10:00am at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver with full military honors.
