Rod was born August 27, 1962 in Decatur, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his father Roderic and is survived by his mother Beth, sisters Kimberly and Karen (Scott), niece Vanessa (Sean), and his great nephew Grayson.
Rod was blessed to have two families, the one he was born into and the one who opened their hearts and home and truly loved him as their own. We are grateful to Nita Shelton, Matea Pacheco, his best buddy Eezayah their extended family and friends, for the care and love they gave to Rod.
In his younger years he lived with his family in Indiana until one day in 1978 he and his family moved to Texas. It was game on-Rod loved everything Texas, cowboy boots and hats, Texas barbecue, Lone Star beer, the Dallas Cowboys, the Houston Astros and of course J.R. Ewing from the hit television show “Dallas”. Although he spent his later years in Colorado, Rod was always a Texan.
Rod attended St. Mary’s Special School in St. Louis, Missouri from the age of six until he graduated at 16. It was at St. Mary’s where Rod first competed in the Special Olympics which provided joy throughout his life. Over the years Rod competed and excelled in his chosen sports, track and field and swimming. He won numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals in these events and even became a local star in his hometown appearing in the newspaper. He also enjoyed bowling, bocce ball and playing basketball (HORSE being his favorite game). Rod also received his black belt in karate. Rod had an amazing memory for recalling the 1960s and 70s players and coaches in professional and college football.
He was an aspiring artist, he loved painting, mosaic art and coloring beautiful pictures using markers and crayons. He shared his art with family and friends often making special individualized pieces.
He also had a competitive edge, known to call out answers while watching games shows Family Feud, and his favorite-The Price is Right (with Bob Barker!).
Rod loved nature. He spent many days enjoying the landscapes and breathtaking views of the many places he visited with his family and friends.
Rod was outgoing, friendly and funny. There were no strangers in Rod’s world. He would smile, extend his hand for a shake and say, “I’m Rod Merriman”. Rod had a profound effect on everyone who met him. It didn’t take long to love Rod. And if Rod loved you, he christened you with a nickname, rarely calling family and friends by their given name. It’s a long and illustrious list, but the most memorable ones include Pop, Mrs. Smith, Sis, Doc-ee, Manessa, Dollface, Neetaaah, Bosom Buddy, Baked Potato, Jam, Sar, Sunday and Honey Pot!
Rod was also known for his one-liners, at times surprising everyone with his sharp wit and sassy sense of humor. Recently telling others, “I’ve been famous all my life; I have lots of fans.” No truer statement was ever made.
A special thanks to Colorado Palliative & Hospice Care for the wonderful care you provided. Ikumi, Caitlynn, Deanna and Codie your compassion and empathy was remarkable-you are special people!
Rod lived a full and happy life, albeit too short. He was a ray of sunshine which warmed everyone in his presence. He was the best of the best and will be forever missed.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.MtViewMortuary.com for the Merriman family.
