

After high school, Roy attended trade school and later went to College in Kearney, Nebraska. When he turned eighteen, he was drafted into the military and served during World War II with the Army Air Force Postal Division. He was very proud of his military service. After being discharged Roy went back to college at Kearney State Teachers College, where he met Wilma Sall. They were married on August 20, 1947. Upon graduation they moved to Elm Creek where he taught math for three years. They then moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he spent the rest of his teaching career with Colorado Springs District #11, retiring in 1981. He was the first principal of Emerson Junior High.
He enjoyed traveling in the United States and overseas along with frequent trips to Cripple Creek. Roy and Wilma became snowbirds for 27 years, traveling to and from Arizona and Colorado. They moved to the Presbyterian Towers in Pueblo, Colorado in 2006.
He is survived by his wife, Wilma of 63 years; daughter, Jayne Custer and husband, Duane of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son, Bob Dethloff and wife, Nancy of Greeley, Colorado; son, John Dethloff and wife, Maggie of Crested Butte, Colorado and daughter, Nancy Lovato of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 3, 2011 from 5:00 -8:00 p.m. at Swan Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Avenue, Colorado Springs. Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, March 4, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., at Memorial Gardens Chapel, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs. Entombment will be immediately following.
