Rudy was born on a farm in Hillsboro, Wisconsin on June 17, 1933. Not unlike his generation, Rudy actually “Had to walk 5 miles in the snow just to go to school”. After graduating from Hillsborough High School, he enlisted in the Navy and served 3 years during the Korean war. After the military tour, Rudy entered the University of Wisconsin, LaCross and graduated with a bachelors in secondary education (later he earned a master’s degree and wrote curriculum for physics textbooks). He began teaching science and math in Omro Wisconsin when he met his wife of 60 years, Gertie. They were married and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where Rudy taught High school physics and math for 33 years. He also coached high school basketball and soccer and became very involved in the International Exchange program. Rudy and Gertie welcomed over 11 foreign students into their home and are all called “our kids”. Rudy left a lasting legacy of love, learning and sports for his students and more important, his children.
Camping was a favorite pastime. The family explored almost all of the National Parks in the Western Unites States, especially those along the way to Wisconsin when the family drove back to spend time on the farm. Zion Park was his favorite and the family spent many summers camping and hiking the trails. Another passion of Rudy’s was Polka dancing. He and Gertie could cut a rug at the local Polka Hall, and the house was always filled with polka music. Upon retiring from teaching, he became a Master Gardener and took up a love of painting. His landscapes adorn may households today.
Rudy and Gertie spent the last few years in Monument, Colorado to be close to their children.
A celebration of his life will be held this summer in Colorado.
