

Lieutenant-Colonel Sarah Diez Lockhart, 72, died peacefully under Hospice care in Wheatfield, NY on January 2, 2015. A veteran for 20 years, she completed two tours of active duty in Germany returning to Colorado Springs, CO in 1977 where she and her family lived for over 35 years.
Lieutenant-Colonel Lockhart was born on July 5, 1942 in Youngstown, NY to Russell and Mildred Freeman Diez. After graduating in 1962 from Millard Fillmore School of Nursing, she joined the Army Nurse Corps and completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from the University of Virginia. Lieutenant-Colonel Lockhart retired with full honors in October 1982.
She married Robert Bonar Lockhart in Charlottesville, Virginia on January 20, 1971. Widowed in 2004, she spent her remaining time as a docent and major supporter of the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. She also volunteered at the Colorado Springs Historical Museum in their gift shop. Football was a favorite pastime, especially when cheering for the Denver Broncos.
She is survived by her daughter, Ryann Lockhart Moore of Fayetteville, AR, and stepdaughters Jennifer (Dan) Foresman of Atco, NJ, Patricia (Robert) Wagner of Rogers, AR, and granddaughter Kelly (Kyle) Heffley of Egg Harbor City, NJ. Sarah was the sister of Margaret Diez of Niagara Falls, NY, Nancy (Paul) Orsi of Youngstown, NY and Ralph (Shelley) Dietz of Simsbury, CT. She is survived by one niece and seven nephews.
Friends and family are invited to a gathering at the Broadmoor Community Church on Friday, January 30th 12:30 – 2:30. A private burial service will be held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs.
