Sharon Elaine Koenig

Sharon Elaine (Smith) Koenig, 81, a resident of Dundas, Minnesota, and from Colorado Springs, Colorado, passed away while visiting her beloved Colorado Springs on September 24, 2024, in the arms of her husband, Darell.

Sharon was born on March 10, 1943, in Independence, Missouri. She is the daughter of George Smith and LouJean (Carpenter) Smith, and lived in many places growing up including Alaska, Ohio and Colorado, where she graduated from Widefield High School and enrolled at the University of Colorado. She married the love of her life, Darell Koenig in 1962 and left college for a life of adventure married to a Soldier. The couple celebrated their 62nd anniversary this past June 9th. They started out in a booming Las Vegas, Nevada and subsequently lived in Arkansas, Alabama, Texas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Kentucky, Germany, Kansas and then retired back to Colorado. They recently moved to be closer to family in Minnesota. She never really settled, but always considered Colorado home.

She was a bank officer at institutions in the many locations she lived throughout her life. She loved music and very much enjoyed singing as part of several Sweet Adeline chapters. She also loved genealogy and had traced ancestry to Eli Whitney and the Plantagenets royal family.

Sharon is survived by her husband, Darell, of Dundas, Minnesota; sister, Kathy (Carl) Perkins, of Falmouth, Virginia; children Lance (Kimberlie) Koenig of Davenport, Iowa, Gavin (Dana) Koenig of Louisville, Kentucky, Kimberly (Eric) Runningen of Northfield, Minnesota; grandchildren Rachel, Lance, Caroline, Geoffrey, Julia, Erin and Graham; she also knew that she had a great grandson on the way.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Robin.

A memorial service will be held at Darell and Sharon’s home in Dundas, Minnesota on October 12, 2024. Her ashes will be interred at the Pikes Peak National Cemetery in Colorado Springs and be spread in the Rocky Mountains around Pikes Peak.
