Shirley was born in Crete, NE to William and Bernice Huntington.
Her early years were spent in Nebraska with her parents moving to Manitou Springs, Colorado when she was in the 5th grade. She graduated in 1953. She was a member of the school Booster Club and a cheerleader for the football and basketball teams. She also won the county wide typing contest.
After school she married Ed Perschbacher. They had two sons together and were divorced after 19 years.
She later met a classmate of hers and married William “Bill” Shumard. They lived in Colorado Springs and Las Vegas, NV.

They loved to travel in their RV and hit all the western states.
