Born on May 2, 1936, in Limon, Colorado, Velma LaRaine Morrow was the daughter of Lawrence Morrow and Lucille (Lohmeier) Morrow. As the eldest of sisters- Dorothy, Eileen, Ella Mae and LaWanda- Velma grew up with many stories of country life until her family moved to town in 1951.
She began her education in a one-room schoolhouse, often riding horseback or walking miles to and from school with her grandma Morrow’s house as a halfway stop. Velma fondly recalled those days, saying, “We were smart, but funny looking in our stockings and gunny sack dresses.” Despite humble beginnings, Velma excelled in school. She attended St Scholastica Girl’s Academy in Cañon City, CO, for 2 year, returning to Limon and earning salutatorian and homecoming queen her senior year.
Working at the drug store in her early years, she had her eye on Bob and began putting extra ice cream in Bob’s milkshake. Robert Monks married Velma June 24, 1956. Together, they were blessed with three children: Daniel (Shonda)Monks, Richard (Denise) Monks, and Connie (Steve) McAdams.
Velma’s passions were many- she loved golf and celebrated a hole in one at age 81. She & Bob created lasting memories boating and traveling with their Marathon rallies. Velma enjoyed watching the Broncos, Notre Dame, Phoenix Suns or any sport activity. Her wisdom and faith shone through in her favorite sayings: “I’m washable,” “Don’t sweat the small stuff,” “We are all God’s children,” and “It’s God’s plan”. Her unwavering faith and deep love for her family were the foundation of her life.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence (Bub) Morrow, Lucille Morrow, her beloved husband Robert Monks, and her grandchild McKenzie Monks.
Velma is survived by her sisters, Dorothy, Eileen, Ella Mae and LaWanda; her children, Dan, Rich and Connie, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a large, loving circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends.
Velma’s legacy is one of faith, love and joy. She touched the lives of everyone she met and will be deeply missed, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
