Wilma Whitney

Wilma was born August 22, 1927 near Freedom, OK to John and Agnes (Bryson) Vincent. She moved with her family to Lakin, KS in 1937. She attended Lakin schools and graduated in 1945. Then she attended Northwestern State Teachers College in Alva, OK and Fort Hays State College in Hays, KS. Wilma taught in rural one-room schoolhouses near Lakin. She married Clayton J. Whitney on August 19, 1951. They lived in Wichita Falls, TX; Topeka, KS; Montgomery, AL; Los Angeles, CA; and Liberal, KS before moving to Colorado Springs in 1958. She taught preschool in Colorado Springs and was one of the original owners of Pixie Village Preschool.

Wilma and her family moved to the Falcon area in 1966 where she was an active member of the school and in the community. She served on the District 49 Board of Education and was a reporter for the Ranchland News for many years. She was the founder of the Questa Docet Antique Club of Falcon. She was a long-time faithful member of the Village Christian Church in Colorado Springs. In the 1970’s she attended the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs and graduated from PPCC. She received the Outstanding Citizen of the Community Award in Falcon and was a volunteer for Goodwill. For the past six years, Wilma was on the Board of Directors of Falcon Senior Services.

Wilma was known for her high value of education, having lots of loyal friendships, being a great listener and storyteller, and loving all her family. Survivors include her husband Clayton J. Whitney, sister-in-law Florine Vincent of Lakin, KS, daughter Barbara (Whitney) Thacker of Falcon, son Jim (Janice) Whitney of Cedaredge, CO, daughters Cathy (David) Baldauf of Salida, CO, and Jackie (C.B.) Harper of St. Louis, MO, seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial service will be Friday, September 28 at 1:00pm at Village Christian Church, 3113 Primrose Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80907. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Falcon Senior Services.
