Dear Bemnet,
I miss you. I still feel your presence here with me. I see your smiling face beaming with joy and hear your sweet voice telling us you are okay. 
I remember the first time I saw you in the hospital my world brighten. When Mom and Dad brought you home, I waited by your crib as you slept until you woke up to play with you. 
You used to follow us to school in your white pajamas and Mom would chase after you.  
When I walked you to kindergarten everyday a trail of children followed us telling me how cute you were. All your life people seemed to gravitate towards you. You attracted others with your beauty, carefree attitude, nonjudgmental personality, and loving presence. 
Over the years, I watched you grow into a beautiful young lady with many talents. You amazed others with your creative abilities and expressive fashion styles.  
I appreciated the fact that whenever I was stressed about a situation or feeling defeated you always made it your priority to assist me find a solution and encouraged me to think more positively.
You were loyal to your loved ones and were ready to defend them fiercely. You cherished spending time with your family and friends. We know you loved us deeply as we loved you the same.  
You taught me an important lesson in life which is how to be open to connect with others and see the value in everyone. We miss you dearly. The way you touched people’s lives and loved others will always be remembered. 
When I heard the news of your passing my world became dark then I quickly remembered how much you loved Jesus and God and knew your spirit lives in Heaven forever. 


Bemnet,

I'm so grateful that I had a chance to talk to you on my birthday last year. I remember staring at my phone at the unknown number contemplating if I should answer. I never answer unknown numbers, but I remember hearing the Holy Spirit directing  me to answer this unfamiliar number. It was so comforting hearing your voice after many years. I immediately had to call Natalie and La'Quisha so that we could reconnect like old times. It had been 6 years since we were all together. I'm so happy that we were able to hear your voice one last time and for the opportunity to pray for you and your soul. Thank you for being such a great friend and for always being there for me. I'll never forget your free and caring spirit. You were beautiful inside and out. We couldn't walk down the street without people staring at your natural beauty and your style of fashion. You could make ANY outfit cute! You were willing to go above and beyond for your friends, especially me. I wish I had one last time for us all to be together, but since that's not an option, you will forever make my birthday a special day because it will be the last memory that I have of all of us. I miss you Bemnet and I love you so very much. Thank you for being there for me whenever I needed you most. Thank you for your willingness to fight or stand up for me if anyone mistreated me. Thank you for urging me to leave New Orleans immediately after you saw that hurricane Katrina was en route.  Thank you for being one of my biggest cheerleaders and for the constant encouragement on this long doctor journey. Thank you for being you ❤️❤️❤️❤️.

Bemnet was always smiling, had high energy, loved dancing and was a great friend. You will be missed. Dance on in heaven. 

My last memory with Bemnet was at a wedding in 2016. Our interaction was short but her embrace was warm and her words were kind. 

Having experienced the loss of a loved one, I understand first hand the pain accompanied by death. I learned two important lessons which I am hoping will be helpful to those in need. 

The first lesson I learned is: death is the opposite of birth not life, as life is eternal. Let’s recall the essence of who Bemnet is through our personal memories, her friends and family and the steps she took while on her path through life; it may not always be “happy” memories but happiness is a subjective state of mind not a fixed state of existence. 

The second lesson I learned is: one can change the past by changing ones perception. We all have a different perception of reality because our realm of focus is different; by changing ones perception of the past, forgiveness, empathy and acceptance of the present moment is achievable. If not, the pain of the past will perpetuate itself and hinder ones ability to move forward. It is not easy to do, as death has a way of making itself appear so recent, no matter how much time has passed; it does however help restore our purpose in fulfilling the agreement we have made with our creator.  

I am not related to Bemnet but she will always be my “cousin”. I love you, sis! 

Yordanos 

The morning just before I found out about you B, I was watching a sermon that started with my pastor speaking about another pastor who just passed. He began speaking along the lines of grieving but then he said this one line that stuck. “If we truly believe in the Lord Jesus Christ then let’s celebrate the everlasting life that has begun. For we serve a God who sacrificed his only son for eternal life not death!” And he said it with so much excitement and joy! God was prepping me for the blow I was about to take. It was hearing that literally 30 minutes prior to finding out about you, the tone was set for the words I was about to hear. Of course I wept, hard, but when I finished those tears that part of the sermon replayed in my mind and my heart was at peace! I was quickly reminded only your flesh has passed but your spirit lives and lives far better than what this world could ever offer! So I’ve grieved at the fact that no more memories can be built, but I celebrate you no longer fighting the battles of flesh vs. spirit we endure daily. B your soul is at rest and your spirit resides where it’s supposed to be! It’s knowing that I am at peace! I love you Bizzy-B 🤗😘

Bemnet, I will miss you four girls running  in and out of my home, and the good times you girls shared💕🥰👏🏾❤️

As I continue to process you not walking this earth anymore, I’m grateful for the time we did have. From Lugonia into adulthood, the memories continuously loop in my head. One thing that settles as I flashback is seeing your smile and hearing your laugh. Oh and we can’t forget how you used to say “oohhh wee” to everything or how everyone would get so annoyed at how we dragged out our words 🤣. Especially when we said “ffffooooorrrreeevvvveeerr” 🤣🤣🤣. I can still hear your voice B, as if you’re standing right in front of me reliving these moments with me. I love you beautiful and congrats on beginning the life we can only imagine! - Spunky

B where do I start… You were more than my best friend, you were my sister, my ace, my twin outside of my twin! As I look back at these photos I see why others say “you can’t say Miriam without saying Bemnet”, vice versa. We knew each other through and through. We had our own way of communicating without speaking nor for others to understand. We checked each other when we were out of pocket but wouldn’t allow anyone else to check us. We protected each other. We loved each other. We understood each other. From the age of 1 we were attached at the hip until our lives slowly began to head in different directions. I moved to the east coast and you went up top. Little did we know that decision led to the beginning of US not holding each other accountable. I’m sorry that decision led to this. Of course I want you here hoping things would get back to how they used to be, but the risks that would entail are far beyond what I could ask of you to continue to stride through. God had better plans for you B; resting in his presence reminding you of your worth, your essence, and the beauty He designed you to be despite the enemy telling you otherwise. I’m at peace knowing you’re resting in His hands, experiencing His love,  rather than chasing earth’s empty promises  only He can fulfill! I love you Bizzy-B and I’m grateful I had you to do life with! I know you’re smiling from ear to ear glowing in a way you so effortlessly do. Rest up gorgeous! - Spunky
