Edgar Duga Oliverio was born in Digos, Philippines on March 9, 1950. He spent his childhood helping his parents on their farm as well as taking care of his younger siblings. Edgar was studious and won quite a few academic awards. While a student at Southern Mindanao Academy he met his future wife, Zenaida. He was fourteen. They struck a friendship that became trans-Pacific when Edgar and his family moved to Oahu in 1965.
After ten years of written correspondence, Edgar and Zeny married on April 17, 1975 in the Philippines. They moved to California soon after and raised their three daughters in Loma Linda.
Edgar was a man of many trades; he was a contractor and lather, a truck driver, a friend, a brother, and a husband. But the role he was most gifted at was being a father. Ever the disciplinarian, his firm but loving hand – coupled with his wife’s godly example – guided his daughters through their childhoods and into their adulthood. When he became a grandpa, Edgar’s patience, tenderheartedness, and skilful talents with babies became clearer as he participated in their lives.
In early December 2008, Edgar complained of headaches and disorientation; his daughters took him to Kaiser Permanente for an MRI. The MRI showed Edgar had Glioblastoma Multiforme, a type of brain cancer. Dr. Yannis informed Edgar that he would live three months without treatment.
Edgar survived sixteen months without chemotherapy or radiation because the Lord wasn’t finished working with Edgar. His daughters and wife had been praying for his salvation since 2001 and the Lord saw to it that He would answer their prayers. It took Edgar’s wilderness experience in the Philippines during the month of March 2010 for God to break him upon the Rock of salvation. There, Edgar made his peace with the Lord and submitted his will to his Savior. God mercifully and miraculously flew Edgar home on April 7, 2010, where his daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren greeted him.
Edgar fell asleep in the Lord on April 9, 2010. His wife was with him. Prior to his death, Edgar said to Zeny, “My wife has forgiven me. My children have forgiven me. I am ready. My conscious is clear.”
Edgar is now sleeping and waiting for the great resurrection morning when he will be reunited with his wife, his children, his grandchildren, and his Savior.
Edgar is survived by his wife, Zenaida; his children, Donovan, Leilani, Jennifer, and Christine; his children-in-law, Leila, Allan, and Brandon; his grandchildren, Kale’a, Gianpaolo, Maile, Malachi, baby Kealoha, and baby Penaflorida.
