Evelyn Gloria Manullang entered into rest in Jesus at her home in Loma Linda on April 28, 2026. She was born on October 10, 1932, in Tarutung Sumatra Indonesia to Theophilius and Rose Almen Manullang, the eighth of eleven children. Her siblings were John, Alma, Flora, Kathy (who died in childhood), Mauliasi, twin sisters Thalma and Thelma, Wellington, Ellen, and her surviving sister Uli. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jan and her eldest daughter, Catherine Joy. Evelyn received her early education and training in Tarutung. From a young age, she learned the SDA faith and English from her parents and shared in the responsibilities of family life, including farming chores, sewing, cleaning, gardening, and helping as the family butcher at just seven years old. During the challenges of the Second World War, her family spent time in both Sumatra and Java. In the late 1940s, Evelyn completed high school in Bangkok, Thailand before returning to Bandung, Indonesia, where she taught first and second grade at a Seventh-day Adventist school. Around that time, a visiting family friend Dr. Ralph Waddell, who she met in Bangkok, gently persuaded her father to allow Evelyn and her sister Ellen to pursue nursing school rather than secretarial work. Before leaving for her studies, she became engaged to her future husband, Jan, with her father encouraging them both to complete their education first before marriage. After earning her nursing degree from Bangkok Sanitarium Hospital, Evelyn worked there for two additional years before moving to Penang Sanitarium and Hospital in George Town, Malaysia. She married Jan in 1960, and together they spent most of the 1960s on Penang Island, where their three children were born. In early 1969, the family moved to Berrien Springs while Jan attended Andrews University. Evelyn worked as a nurse in area hospitals, helping support the family during their early years in America. In the early 1980s, the family relocated to Loma Linda, where Evelyn would spend the remainder of her life. In Loma Linda, Evelyn continued her nursing career and her lifelong love of gardening, faithfully supporting her children through their education, and worked alongside her husband to manage their finances and invest in property. Her deep compassion for others, especially children, led her to open her home to nearly 20 foster children during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Later in life, Evelyn devoted herself to caring for her grandchildren, supporting her daughter during illness, and tending lovingly to her husband in his later years. Her legacy is one of selfless care, unwavering devotion, and deep love for family. She expressed that love through generosity, encouragement, prayer, and a constant desire to keep her loved ones close. She was the glue that held the family together and made them accountable to each other. Evelyn is lovingly remembered by her sister Uli; sister-in-law Darlene; daughter Rohannah and her husband Robert; son Johannes and his wife Evie; her grandchildren Joshua, Ian, Liona, Matthew, and Allison Johanna; and many nieces and nephews. Her family looks forward to the promise of reunion with her and other loved ones when Jesus returns. A viewing and service celebrating Evelyn’s life will be held at 09:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, at the Loma Linda University Church sanctuary, followed by interment at Montecito Memorial Park and Mortuary.
