Gene was born to Elmer & Alice Eisenbeisz on December 2, 1948 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Gene, along with his parents and his brother Gary, lived on a farm in Hosmer, South Dakota, where Gene’s great grandfather Matheis Eisenbeisz immigrated to in 1893.
Growing up, Gene was an avid athlete. He played football, basketball, and played trombone in the high school marching band. In 1965 the family moved to North Hollywood, California where both Elmer and Alice worked for the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Elementary School. The following year, the family moved back to South Dakota where Gene graduated from North Central High School in Aberdeen.
After graduating high school, Gene was drafted into the army and served as a medic stationed in Okinawa from 1969 to 1971 during the Vietnam War. After his honorable discharge, Gene continued his education at the Minnesota Business School before graduating from Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1974.
As a devoted father of two, Gene enjoyed taking his children on adventures whenever possible. This included scuba diving near Laguna Beach, where he taught Jason how to dive, and many weekends spent hiking the nearby Mount Baldy trails with his daughter Elizabeth. Gene was also a man who liked to fix things and would often take on large house projects and would end up enticing his kids to help.
Gene worked in human resources for National Gypsum Company and Oregon Steel Mills before assuming the position of Supervisor of Business Services for San Bernardino County in 1992. As a public servant for the county, Gene helped countless families and businesses in the local community by fostering employment opportunities and connecting job seekers with available jobs. After twenty-three years with San Bernardino County, Gene retired in 2015 as a resident of Rancho Cucamonga.
After his retirement, Gene spent much of his time tinkering with home improvement projects and visiting his grandchildren, Jasmine and Maverick, who were his pride and joy. If he wasn’t talking about his grandchildren, you could find him in a lively debate about politics.
He is survived by his children Jason Eisenbeisz and Elizabeth Riley, his brother Gary Eisenbeisz, and his grandchildren Jasmine Eisenbeisz and Maverick Riley. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer & Alice Eisenbeisz.
Gene was a kind man with a gentle heart and will be greatly missed.
Gene will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery on Friday September 16th at 9:15am. A Celebration of Life will be held at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in San Bernardino on Saturday September 17th at 10:00am.
