August 6, 1923 – June 3, 2023
Harriet Rebecca Glidden died on June 3, 2023, under hospice care at her home in Rancho Cucamonga. At 99 years old, she died peacefully of old age or as she would say, “I’ll go when it’s time for the angels to take me to heaven.” If you were blessed to know her, you would know that she was an angel herself … the sweetest soul who always filled a room with love and grace.
Harriet was born on August 6, 1923, in Fall River, Massachusetts, and moved to Los Angeles, California, with her family around the age of 3. After graduating from Garfield High School in 1941, she worked as a switchboard operator in East LA where she eventually met her husband Glenn Edward Glidden and married on November 23, 1949. In 1950, Harriet & Glenn purchased their home in Montebello, CA, where they raised their daughter, Laura Irene, and their son, Donald Edward.
A proud American, Harriet always immersed herself in the news and current events. She enjoyed volunteering and chaired several high school reunions and fashion shows to support orphanages in the 80’s and early 90’s. A coffee lover to the core, she never missed a morning cup! She made the best potato salad and loved to enjoy a cold light beer or a sip of brandy. Roses were her favorite flower and over the years she enjoyed caring for several cats … “Girl” being one of her favorites. She wrote poetry as a hobby and would often recite her latest poems at holiday dinners, which was always a treat.
Harriet was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed the holidays and always loved a good party and any excuse to celebrate with the ones she loved! She is survived by her daughter Laura Nickum (Thomas); her six grandchildren, Jason, Heather (Dan), Gina (Clay), Bryan, Kyle, and Julian; and her five great-grandchildren, Kendyl, Kelsey, Kiley, Liam, and Ella.
Along with her husband Glenn and son Donald (Yolanda), she is preceded in death by her parents Samuel & Rebecca, brothers Milton (Sally) and Arthur (Mary Lou), and her sister Ethel (Hank). While she is so deeply missed here on earth, we find great peace knowing she is reunited with so many family members and friends in heaven.
A funeral service in her memory will be held on Monday, June 26, 2023, at the Montecito Mortuary Cypress Chapel located at 24145 Barton Rd., in Loma Linda, CA. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m., followed by a chapel service at 10 a.m., and immediately followed by a graveside service. Lunch reception to follow at the Rangel Residence in Rancho Cucamonga.
