With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Manuel R. Virola-Gonzalez, affectionately known as Pops, who departed this life peacefully at home in Modesto, California, on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the age of 96.
Born in 1928 in Yauco, Puerto Rico, Manuel was one of twelve children of Pedro Rojas and Delores Virola-Gonzalez. During his early years, he traveled between Puerto Rico and the mainland United States, eventually settling in New York, where he met the love of his life, Francisca Rivera. Together, they built a family of ten children, living between Puerto Rico and New York before relocating to California in 1971—a place he would call home for the remainder of his life.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Manuel was a man of remarkable strength, deep love, and steadfast independence. He held many jobs over the years to support his family, eventually retiring in 1990 from his role as an orderly in Menlo Park. Even in retirement, he remained active in his community, working as a school crossing guard well into his 80s in Moreno Valley, California, where he lived for over 30 years.
In May 2006, Manuel and Francisca made their lifelong commitment official by marrying, surrounded by their loving family. Though Francisca passed in 2010, their bond remained unbreakable in spirit.
Manuel found joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially in the laughter and love of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His home was often filled with lively conversation, the sound of children playing, and the occasional spirited debate with the little ones. Known for his adventurous spirit, he made solo trips by bus and train between Southern California and the Central Valley, always ready for a quick visit or family gathering. A lifelong Disneyland fan, he continued enjoying rides like Pirates of the Caribbean and It’s a Small World well into his 90s.
On any given day, you could find Pops sitting in his rocker with the garage door open, chatting with neighbors or simply watching the world go by. Though time eventually slowed his steps, his warm and vibrant presence never dimmed.
Manuel was preceded in death by his beloved wife Francisca, his parents, siblings, sons Wilfredo Gonzalez, Luis Rivera, and Noel Gonzalez, and grandson Carlos Gonzalez Jr. He is survived by his children: Carlos, Manuel II, Eliezer (Tina), Marisol (Nick), Madeline (James), Judith (Ernie), and Daisy (Rick); along with a legacy of 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren who carry forward his love and memory. He will also be deeply missed by the many friends and neighbors who became extended family over the years.
