Ann "Curious Soul" Bates Hiban, 88, of Columbia MD, embarked on her final journey on October 10, 2023 in Columbia, MD. Born on June 25, 1935 in Boston, MA to Emily and Earle Bates, Ann left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Ann was not your average teacher. As a High School Special Education Teacher at Wilde Lake High School, she had a knack for making every day extraordinary. Her students adored her, and she had a heart full of compassion and patience.
Beyond her career, Ann was a social butterfly with a zest for life. She could strike up a conversation with anyone and always had a twinkle in her eye. Her love for travel took her to remarkable places, but her favorite journey was always back to her loving family.
When Ann wasn't jet-setting, she could be found challenging her friends to intense games of mahjong or bridge. She had a knack for winning, but her true victory was the joy and laughter she shared with those around her.
Ann is survived by her children, Michael Thomas Hiban, Patrick Joseph Hiban, Jennifer Ling Hiban, Barbara Jo Hiban, and Timothy Robert Hiban. She also leaves behind 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother Emily, father Earle, and brother Jerry. Together, they created a family bond that will forever be cherished.
A graduate of Bethesda Chevy Chase High School and Duke University, Ann's thirst for knowledge was unquenchable. She believed that education was the key to unlocking endless possibilities. A proud pioneer of developer James Rouse's planned city of Columbia Maryland , Ann moved to the 21044 zip code in 1970 and spent the next 53 years in a perpetual good mood.
Ann found solace and peace at St. John The Evangelist Roman Catholic Church. It was there that she discovered a spiritual connection that brought her comfort and strength.
To honor Ann's memory, memorial services will be held in the third week of December at St. John The Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, located at 10431 Twin Rivers Road, Columbia, Maryland 21044. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, as Ann always had a soft spot for helping children in need.
The Witzke Funeral Home in Columbia, Maryland has been entrusted with the arrangements. They will ensure that Ann's farewell is as vibrant and lively as she was.
Ann Bates Hiban, you may have left this world, but your spirit will forever dance in our hearts. Keep shining bright, Curious Soul.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.witzkefuneralhomes.com for the Hiban family.
