

Bernice lived a life defined by creativity, service, and deep commitment to her community. She devoted 25 years to the Columbia, Maryland community as Village Manager of Wilde Lake, where she played a vital role in guiding local leadership, supporting residents, and helping shape one of the nation’s most notable planned communities. Her steady leadership and dedication left a lasting mark on Wilde Lake and the broader Columbia area.
In addition to her civic contributions, Bernice was a passionate artist who found great joy in creative expression throughout her life. She further pursued her love of the arts academically, earning a Master’s degree in Art History from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her appreciation for art and culture enriched both her personal life and the community she served.
In recognition of her lasting impact and dedication to the arts, the gallery at Slayton House in Wilde Lake was named in her honor- the Bernice Kish Gallery- a tribute that continues to support and showcase local artists and reflects her enduring influence on the community.
Bernice was the loving mother of John Kish, Michelle Klima, and Ann-Marie Haynie. She was also a proud grandmother and great-grandmother, and her family remained a central source of joy and connection throughout her life.
In her later years, she was a resident of Vantage House, where she spent her final chapter surrounded by care and community.
Bernice will be remembered for her warmth, strength, creativity, and unwavering dedication to others. Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the community she helped build.
There will be a celebration mass at St. John’s Catholic Church, Interfaith Center Friday May 15th at 12 noon and a reception at the Merriweather Lakehouse in Columbia Saturday, May 16th 1:00-5:00 pm.
