George Christian Jr., born August 6, 1946 to Mary Harcum and George Christian Sr, passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 55 years, Marion, by his side the morning of August 25, 2022. He is survived by his wife Marion Christian; daughter, Kimberly Dawn Sims, son, Koran George Christian (Magdalena Misiak-Christian) and his five grandchildren: Kelsye, Kaia, Nicholas, Skyler, and Zophia.
George, in an inseparable partnership with Marion, forged a family defined by their love, inner strength, trust, and respect for one another. George and Marion were one. They achieved so much to be proud of TOGETHER, and together they ensured that those accomplishments were celebrated. George and Marion traveled the world, always finding laughter, love, and adventure in each other. They were/are the model of a union, and that beautiful union will continue through all phases of existence.
Even though George often worked long hours and traveled frequently, he was always there to love, teach, support, motivate, protect, and listen to his family. He exemplified what it meant to be a Husband and a Parent for his kids, Kim and Koran. George cherished family gatherings and loved his role as Granddad and “Grandy”. He would often be caught proudly beaming while observing his kids and grandkids flourishing in their accomplishments and understanding of love and family - - His Pride and Joy.
George’s drive to achieve a deeper understanding of energy, the power of thought, and their impact on life’s outcomes was a constant. This interest shaped him into the source of strength, wisdom, and warmth that made him the Husband, Father, and Friend to those who knew him. His legacy: A ripple effect of positivity and introspection that prioritized family unity, and cohesiveness; ensuring that all those in his circle of love were protected and never left behind.
George was an accomplished and respected member of CBS News in Washington DC, where he served as an electronic engineer, photojournalist, and producer for 47 years. George’s skill and insistence to strive for perfection in all tasks opened doors, providing a multitude of opportunities to witness historic events and experiences worthy of entries in the Smithsonian. George traveled the world with U.S. Presidents on Air Force One as part of the CBS White House Press Corps. A few of his experiences included being one of three people in the White House Oval Office when President Richard Nixon signed his resignation (1974); the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989); the rising events in China at Tiananmen Square (1989); the release of Nelson Mandela in South Africa (1990); the filming of the Million Man March (1995); the attacks of 9/11 while on Air Force One with President George W. Bush (2001); the inaugurations of President Barack Obama (2009/2013). George was highly regarded for his work, receiving many awards throughout his employment, including:
● DuPont Columbia University Award for Excellence in Broadcasting
● Emmy Awards (9/11 coverage & “Face the Nation”)
● Peabody Award
● 1st recipient of The Radio Television Correspondents’ Association (RTCA) – Jerry Thompson Memorial Award
