Born to Iowa farmers Carl and Helen Moe on July 31, 1936, he carried their values of hard work, humility, and kindness throughout his life. His path took him from Iowa State, to Michigan State, and ultimately to Cornell, where he earned his PhD before dedicating his career to agricultural science and nutrition research with the USDA. His work helped shape the standards still used in dairy nutrition today, improving the quality and productivity of dairy farming for generations. If you’ve enjoyed milk, cheese, ice cream, or just about any dairy product, you’ve benefited from his work.
But to those who knew him personally, Dad was far more than his accomplishments. He was thoughtful, patient, steady, and endlessly willing to help others. He rarely raised his voice, loved a good conversation, and had a simple way of putting life’s smaller frustrations into perspective: “It just doesn’t matter.”
In his later years, he became an avid Orioles fan, rarely missing a game on TV, and enjoyed the friendships and community he found at Brightview.
Most of all, Paul loved his family. He is survived by his wife, Sherry; his sons Tony, Bennett, and Peter and their families; his stepchildren, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; his sisters Ruth and sister-in-law Peg; and many people whose lives were made better by knowing him.
We will miss his wisdom, his humor, his calm presence, and his generous heart more than words can express.
A private burial is planned for July 31, 2026.
