

Robert J. Hughes, Jr. passed away on May 23, 2022, at the age of 71 years after an illness with cancer. He is survived by his wife Margaret M. Miller and daughter Laura E. Maiocco and brother Dennis Hughes. Robert was preceded in death by his son Scott Miller and his parents Robert J. Hughes, Sr., and Elsie Hughes.
Robert was raised in St. Claire, PA, graduating from Nativity BVM High School (Pottsville) in 1968. He was educated at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute from 1968 to 1974 having earned a Master of Science (MS) degree in Management Engineering, with distinguished careers in the Federal Government and Private Sector. He joined the Export- Import Bank of the United States (Eximbank) in 1974 as a Management Systems Engineer under Carl Cass, Chief Engineer of the Engineering Division. While in the Division, he was assigned to oversee the technical aspects of projects that included some very large iron and steel plants in Europe, as well as in Latin America, most notably, Mexico. He was the engineer within the Division assigned to evaluate the technical aspects of aircraft transactions, which really grew during the 1970s. Then, from 1991 until 1997, he served as the Deputy Vice President of the Engineering and Environment Division. He was selected to work on detail for the Bank’s Office of the Chairman, and later with other Divisions where he guided the Bank through its early development with programs involving information technology. He served as Senior Enterprise Architect at Lockheed Martin from 2001 to 2010; then joined Mantech International as Systems Engineer from 2010 to 2014. He retired in 2014 as a Senior Consultant.
Robert enjoyed sports, music, learning and had a lifelong love of the collector car genre. He will always be remembered as a loving husband and father and as kind and welcoming. Robert is also survived by many relatives and friends.
Family will receive visitors on Friday, July 1 from 11AM to 12PM at Witzke Funeral Homes, Inc., 5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045, where a service to celebrate his life will begin at 12PM.
