Thanksgivings at the Savage House.  The delicious and generous spread prepared by Chef Tom.  Lively conversations with gracious hosts Tom and  Idell.  Memorable post-feast guitar music in the basement  sound studio by rock star Tom.  Rock on. 

Tom Savage was a complicated, yet very simple guy.  He worked for me for more than a decade, where I was able to experience his brilliance and unique approach to challenges, as technology evolved in our midst.  He was animated, creative, and rather transparent about his view of the world - which brings me to how much he loved his family.  Like any great parent, he wanted to make sure that his children would be happy, successful, artistic and find a love as great as the one that he found in Idell.  No matter what else was going on, he would gush about how incredibly talented his wife was, how proud he was that Miranda was pursuing her dreams and that Ian had found his way to technology and a bride-to-be.  Tom called me a couple of weeks ago, just to chat.  I had no idea that it would be the last time that I'd speak with him, because as a North Carolinian, my last thing to him was that I looked forward to breaking bread with him again (if you knew him, you knew how much of a chef he was).  I knew how much he enjoyed his aviary - we shared a love of so many things, so when i think of Tom in the future, I'll remember those things, namely his love of the arts and technology (yes, they do coexist well) and how much he enjoyed the life that he lived, despite setbacks and hardships.  Peace to all and remember to cherish the life and love bestowed because there is never enough time to share it.

I would have liked to have known Tom when he was in his musical prime.  I had jams at my house and I invited him to a jam a few years back. He said his chops were not up to speed enough to play but he would like to come watch. I said sure. He came in. Of course he had a great personality and hit it off wonderfully with everyone at the jam. 

I showed him my guitar rig and demonstrated my tone.  He commented on how "Clean" it was, and I could sense he was making a suggestion as much as an observation. Perhaps that the sound could be something a little "warmer".  (Sorry for the guitar geek speak. I won't go into it. If you are a guitarist...you know. ) It made me look more into getting a warmer sound and I explored different options. It was a great lesson.  Thanks Tom!!!


Tom Savage is the kind of guy you read about and wonder what he must be like.  You’re lucky to meet a guy like Tom. You’re blessed if you get the chance to know a guy like Tom.  I was fortunate to call him friend and even more so, because the feeling was mutual. I’ll miss talking and laughing with him.  He knew he was a handful, unapologetically so. We solved all the problems of the world during our conversations. Idell, Ian and Miranda - know how much he loved you and that he was so proud of you all.
