

William Everett Sublett, Jr., known affectionately as Bill Sublett, departed this life on December 18, 2023, at the age of 97, at Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport, Maryland. Born on March 15, 1926, in Richmond, Virginia, Bill was the son of William Everett Sublett Sr. and Mattie Smith.
Bill's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and a profound love for family. A proud graduate of Armstrong High School in Richmond, VA, he embarked on a military career is the US Army. Bill shared the story of the day when US Army personnel were asked to make a choice to continue in the US Army by standing in one line or joining another line that formed the original members of the US Airforce; he joined the Airforce that day in 1947. This was a decision he recalled with pride throughout his life.
Following an honorable discharge, Bill continued his commitment to public service, joining the US Federal Government as a Federal Protective Services Officer, where he worked until his well-deserved retirement. His dedication extended beyond his professional life, as he generously volunteered his time as part of the US Coast Guard, showcasing his unwavering commitment to the well-being of others.
Bill found joy in various facets of life, from attending church services to playing the organ. His love for boating and cruising allowed him to embrace the beauty of the world, reflecting his adventurous spirit.
He was preceded in death by his sister Dallas Sublett-Hamilton, brother Cecil McWilliams, wives, Kathryn Davis and Luray Murray and his daughter, Cynthia Cannon-Mitchell. Bill is survived by his daughters Greer Graham, Katreen Hughes-Craig, Sharon Bundy, and his sons William Sublett III and William Sublett IV. His legacy lives on through his 21 grandchildren, 52 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous other family members and friends.
Funeral arrangements, facilitated by Witzke Funeral Homes, Inc. of Columbia, MD, include a viewing on Friday, December 29th, from 10-11, followed by a Celebration of Life service from 11 to 12 at Witzke Funeral Home (5555 Twin Knolls Road, Columbia, MD 21045). An interment ceremony will take place from 1 to 1:30 at Maryland National Memorial Cemetery (13300 Baltimore Ave, Laurel, MD 20707).
