A light has gone out with Alice 's passing.  Although it has been a long time since I last saw her, there are many good memories of her time in Oskaloosa when Duane was William Penn  College president.  She was also a faithful and active member of College Avenue Friends Church during that time and, after moving to Columbia,  she kept in touch with church friends frequently until shortly before her passing.   She was always cheerful, optimistic and ready to help. God bless you as you grieve.

The passing of a generation -- Aunt Alice was the epitome of the saying, "Good things come in small packages".  Small, spunky, full of fun, faith and positive energy, she  never seemed more then half her age. Thankful we were able to visit with her at the Spencer family reunion last year.  Even then, at the age of 93, she was interested in others, remembering what was going on in our lives, asking about my family. So sorry we will be unable to attend her memorial service. My heart and prayers are with you, David and Eileen, and the rest of the family.  You were so blessed to have her as your mom!

(Part 3)
A – Grandma was accepting. She was accepting of people, accepting of situations and circumstances, even accepting of her health.  She wouldn’t dwell on what if this could be different or what if that could be different.  She accepted what was and always made the best of it.  When I think of her, I think of how she would count her blessings – always positive, always thankful.  She was an example of Paul’s words in Colossians 3:15, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace.  And be thankful.” 
I will miss my dear Grandma so, so much!  But I imagine her meeting Jesus face to face – no blurry vision, no heart issues, her memory intact!  Seeing all her family and friends that have gone on before her.  It blesses me to think of those things for her!  It was time. 
I Thessalonians 5:23-24 “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through.  May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  The one who calls you is faithful and he will do it.”

(Part 2)
D – my Grandma was disciplined.  She was disciplined in her diet only serving herself the amount of food she could eat so that nothing was left on her plate by the time she was finished eating.  She was disciplined in exercising every night before bed to keep from having back pain and difficulty from an injury she had sustained in high school.  She would follow through to what she committed herself.  She was disciplined in what words she allowed to come out of her mouth.  Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.”
M - my Grandma was and is memorable.  I am so thankful for the nearly 50 years I got to have her in my life!  Not many have the privilege of having that amount of time with their grandparents.  She always made our times together memorable.  She would bake delicious treats at Christmas.  When my sisters and I were kids, she picked out and bought a house in St. Louis while Grandpa was in the hospital.  Part of the reason she picked that house was because it had a play house in the basement and a backyard with a patio and room to run, hide and play.  It also had a raspberry bush that we would pick raspberries to eat and enjoy.  She would also take us girls to the pool on hot summer days. 
Over the last several years, I enjoyed keeping in touch with her over the phone.  We would talk at least once a month and besides being my Grandma, she became my friend.  Like Mary, the mother of Jesus “who treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart” (Luke 2:19), I too, treasure the memories of my dear Grandma.

G – my Grandma was good-hearted.  She was always thinking of others and thoughtful in her interactions with them.  She would serve others first before thinking of herself.  Romans 12:10 “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.  Honor one another above yourselves.” 
R – my Grandma was resilient.  She was the youngest of 8 learning to make the most of what you have and of the circumstances you are in.  She didn’t complain but learned the secret that the Apostle Paul learned – Philippians 4:12-13 “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty.  I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” 
A – my Grandma was active.  There was a time when Grandma participated in Tai Chi classes at Lenore.  She would go to the Vespers services they held at Lenore.  She was on several committees over the years, she would quilt, she would volunteer at the homeless shelter and she was active in her church.  She would spend time outdoors – planting, weeding and pruning.  Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.  It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” 
N – my Grandma was neighborly.  She was always friendly, helpful and community-minded.  She would visit several residents (her friends) at Lenore.  She would beautify the grounds and wooded areas at Lenore.  She would laugh, she would smile, she was kind.  She would participate in the once-a-month birthday parties at Lenore and dress up on Halloween to hand out candy to the children of the staff that worked at Lenore. James 2:8 “If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself”, you are doing right.”

My mother and father, Irene and Harold Dugger, lived down the street on Fleming Drive during the 90’s.  Alice and Irene worked together on Church Women United projects.  Later, I would visit with Alice at the Columbia Senior Activity Center where she came for Tai Chi classes.  Alice was always kind, caring and showed interest in how I was doing after my mother’s death.  I am a Future Resident at Lenoir and had expected to see her welcoming presence there when I am able to move in.  She was a force of good in the community!
