It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Augustus (Gus) Hern Jr., a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, friend, and cherished member of our community. Gus passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2025, while recovering from a recent stroke. He faced recovery with strength and hope and his sudden passing has left a deep void in the lives of all who knew and loved him.
Gus was born on September 11, 1970 to Augustus Hern Sr. and Bessie Ruth (Hayes) Hern in Columbia, MO. He lived a life marked by kindness, humor, strength, and an unwavering love for his family and friends.
He leaves behind seven children and five grandchildren who were the light of his life and greatest pride. They will carry his love and legacy in their hearts forever. Though his time as grandpa was far too short, he cherished every single moment & dreamed of the years to come.
Gus was a 1988 graduate of Rock Bridge High School. He was known for his infectious love of music and vibrant spirit. Gus brought joy to every room with his favorite 90’s R&B tunes, dance moves, and beautiful singing voice. He had a deep appreciation for old school cars, often sharing memories of cruising with his music turned up loud. His passion for life, laughter, and connection touched everyone who knew him.
Gus married his loving wife Tami on March 23, 2023 and even though their time together was short, the love they shared was deep, genuine, full of joy, laughter & shared dreams.
He had a special gift for working with children. Gus coached youth basketball, was a member of Boys & Girls Club and just recently worked at High Road School of Boone County.
He is survived by his wife Tami Hern, his mother, Bessie Hern, his sisters Tina Hern and Tonja (Lorenzo) Rounds, his honorary brother Anthony Robinson, his children, Jordan (Jeffrey) Graves, Augustus "Tre" (Heather) Hern III, Tyler (Sara) Hern, Deric (Jaden) Hern, William Hern, Hallie (Tashawn) Brown and Malachi (Kaylee) Jackson as well as bonus children Cody and Brandon, his grandchildren: Flora, Jaylen, Julian, Karson and Kennedy as well as bonus grandchildren: Sunnie and Selah and so many cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held on May 3, 2025 at Sunrise Optimist in Columbia, MO from 2pm to 6pm where the family invites all those who knew Gus to come and share stories, music and love in honor of a truly unforgettable soul.
