

He was Professor Emeritus of the Biochemistry Department, University of Missouri. Dick was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 17, 1927. He graduated Cum Laude from Franklin and Marshall College, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1951. He earned a PhD in chemistry from Northwestern University in 1955. After working in industry with Armour and Glidden Companies, he decided his heart was in academia and he joined the Department of Biochemistry at the University of Missouri as an Assistant Professor in 1960. He served as Chairman of the Department from 1973-1977 and as Director of Medical Biochemistry from 1993 until his final retirement in 2011. Dick was very passionate about teaching both graduate students and medical students as well as publishing many papers in his research field. He also spent a year as a Research Scientist at the University of London, and lectured in many places including the Romanian Academy of Science and the Medical School at the Universidad Autonoma, Guadalajara, Mexico. He was devoted to his family and will be remembered by students, friends and family for his sharp wit and sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Fortune of 37 years. Other survivors include: two daughters, Michal Campbell and Leslie Decker; five grandchildren; Ashley, Shane, Melissa, Alexandra, and Jacqueline and by three great grandchildren; Kayelynn, Kellen and Harper. He was preceded in death by his son, Benedict Campbell Jr. and a brother, James Campbell.
At his request there will be no funeral services. A “Celebration of Life” is scheduled for Saturday May 7, at 901 Westport Dr, Columbia, from 5-7 pm, friends and family are welcome.
