Daniel Lewis Scotten, 86, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at University Hospital in Columbia. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public funeral in Columbia. He will be lovingly laid to rest in a private graveside service beside his parents in Sedalia, Missouri.
Born during the excitement of Fair Week on August 17, 1938, in Sedalia, Dan was the child of Daniel Webster “Ted” Scotten and Anna Martha Bolton Scotten, who preceded him in death. Growing up on a Missouri farm, Dan learned the values of hard work, humility, and community—principles that guided him throughout his life. These principles and his dedication to his morning prayer routine formed his character.
He graduated from Smith-Cotton High School and went on to earn degrees in accounting and economics from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. He graduated from LSU School of Banking in Louisiana and Cannon Schools at Pepperdine University in California. While serving five years in the U.S. Army Reserves, Dan began a career that would span decades and leave a lasting legacy in the financial and civic life of several communities in Kansas and Missouri.
After college Dan started as a CPA at KPMG in Kansas City before moving on to the Cory Salt Company in Hutchinson, Kansas. His leadership abilities soon brought him to Commerce Bancshares, where he served as comptroller. In 1975, he relocated to Columbia to become president and board member of Commerce Bank, later also serving as an officer and board Member of First National Bank. His professional journey continued at Shelter Insurance, where he helped establish Shelter Bank and served as its President and CEO until his retirement. He was asked to join Boone County National Bank (Central Bank of Boone County), focusing on business development. He ended his long career after serving one year as the Development Officer with the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri, where he brought his trademark energy and compassion to the nonprofit world.
Dan was more than a banker; he was a tireless advocate for his community for over fifty years. He gave his time, energy, and heart to numerous causes, serving on and chairing many boards, mentoring students and professionals, and fundraising for local schools, colleges, and charitable organizations. In recognition of his deep commitment to Columbia, he was honored as Ambassador of the Year, Citizen of the Year, and received a Lifetime Membership Award from the Columbia Area Chamber of Commerce. A longtime member of Columbia’s Northwest Rotary Club, Dan was proud to be a Paul Harris Fellow.
In retirement, Dan turned his focus to genealogy, writing, and publishing several works including the Peter Scotten Tales, which combined his deep and lasting love of family history with reflections on life and legacy. These stories were not just about the past—they were gifts to his family and friends.
Dan was united in marriage to Sandy Dostal Scotten for over 25 years and together they built a life filled with love, shared values, and enduring partnership. Sandy survives him, along with their beloved children: Dr. Mitzi Sue Scotten-Peterson (Will) of Arkansas; Daniel Monte Scotten of Kansas; Troy (Dawn) Sublette of Missouri; Tony Sublette of Texas; Blake (Kubra) Suttie of Pennsylvania; and his grandchildren: Jared, Tyler, and Zach Sublette; Duncan, Oliver, and Farah Suttie, who each brought him immense pride and joy. He also leaves behind two nieces, several cousins and cherished extended family from both the Scotten and Dostal families. In addition to his parents, Daniel was preceded in death by one sister: Mary Katherine Scotten Davis of Kansas. Dan’s legacy is one of quiet strength, thoughtful leadership, skillful mentoring and boundless generosity.
Luke 12:48 "To whom much is given, much will be expected."
