Gary was born on August 27, 1951, in Pickstown, South Dakota, and grew up on the farm. His life was defined by grit, strength, and a lack of fear—whether he was out on wild adventures or causing trouble with his cousins, Tom and Leo. He spent his youth riding and breaking horses, a passion that carried him to the rodeo circuit, where he rode bulls, broncs, and bareback for years. Gary was blessed with three sons from his first marriage: Chad (born October 31, 1971), Todd (born March 5, 1974), and Gary Jr. (born June 8, 1977). On September 19, 1980, Gary married Rhonda Wischhof in Norfolk, Nebraska. Together they welcomed their daughter, Carmon, on February 7, 1983.
Gary loved working with his hands, inventing and building. He spent time in Alaska working on the construction of the pipeline, drove trucks in the North Dakota oil fields, and did concrete construction in Wyoming. However, his most enduring professional legacy was in Missouri, where he owned and operated his own concrete construction business for over 40 years. Whether operating heavy equipment or pouring a foundation, Gary had a unique, inventive spirit. He could visualize a complex project in his head and build it from scratch, always finding a way to get it done that left folks shaking their heads.
To know Gary was to know a man with no filters and an enormous heart. A natural storyteller who loved socializing with everyone and was always ready with a joke. He lived without hesitation and was the first person to show up when someone needed help. Gary was a steady hand for his friends and a rock for his family.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Alvin and Helen Westendorf; his sister, Rosemary Westendorf; his son, Gary Jr. Westendorf; his grandson, Owen Westendorf; and his cousin and lifelong friend, Leo Westendorf.
He is survived by his wife, Rhonda Westendorf; his children, Chad Westendorf, Todd Baune (Terri), and Carmon Wade (Jeremiah). He leaves behind a legacy of grandchildren who will carry on his spirit: Tatum, Natalie, Brecklyn, Blayne, and Taaveti Westendorf; Olivia and Ethan Ham, Jordyn, Mia, and Bristol Baune; and Zane Wade.
He is also survived by his siblings: Ray Westendorf (Betty), Pat Waters (Gary), Dee Williams (Jack), Sue Kelly (Dave), and Shirley Hedges, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gary’s life was a masterclass in living boldly. He didn’t just occupy space; he built things, fixed things, and moved the earth. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Friday, March 6, 2026, at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W, Columbia, MO 65202. Friends and family are invited to gather to share stories and remember a life well-lived.
