Helen Louise Walker nee Showalter was born March 13, 1928 in Needmore, West Virginia to the parents of Michael and Millie (Emswiler) Showalter. She departed this life on Oct. 31, 2020 in Columbia, Missouri.
Helen is predeceased by her husband, Donald Walker, and her sister, Evelyn Carter. She is survived by her brother, Michael (Delores) Showalter, one niece, Jennifer Showalter, two nephews, James Showalter and Steven (Rachel) Showalter. She is also survived by a step daughter, Donaleen Millard and numerous cousins.
Helen retired from Verizon after having been an employee with them for over 35 years. For most of her life she was an active member of a local Baptist church wherever she was living, giving her talents to the music ministry with her voice and directing children’s choirs. She remained an active member of the PEO Sisterhood until recent years when her health precluded it. Helen served as an officer in various positions in her local chapter, including the office of President.
Helen and Don loved to RV travel and in their retirement spent many days touring the USA. She also loved to paint and was especially gifted at china painting with all kinds of floral, animals and nature.
The family would like to especially thank the staff at Lenoir Woods Community where she lived for the last year of her life. She was especially blessed to have the love and care of the staff at the Greenwood Memory Care Assisted Living Community at Lenoir. On Oct. 23 Helen had a serious fall and spent the last week of her life at the Lenoir REACH facility with the help of the Compassus Hospice and Palliative Care. They both assured her of the comfort and peace needed during this time.
Helen will be sorely missed but the family is thankful for her 92 years and the life she shared with all of us. There will be no public memorial service but the family welcomes you to have a time of thankfulness and shared memories at your time of giving thanks on Thanksgiving Day.
If you would care to donate in Helens memory we would suggest contributing to an organization providing COVID relief. A couple of organizations you may want to consider are: No Kid Hungry and World Central Kitchen.
