John was born January 26, 1920, son of John W. and Viola Blanche Garrison. He was a beloved husband to his bride of 72 years Dorothy (Allen) Garrison and a loving father of his three daughters, Doris Bender (Ralph), Elizabeth Brungs (Heinz) and Carolyn Reich. Known as Papa (and golf cart chauffeur) his memory will live on in his greatest joys, his grandchildren, Julie Moriarity (Mike), Jennifer Christofferson (Phil), Scott Arnold (Sabrina), Kate Center (David), Kay Brungs and Molly Reich-Chester (Aaron) and great grandchildren, Mary Claire, Ellie, and Brady Moriarity, Matthew and Bennett Christofferson and Austin, Gabi and Taylor Center.
Having made his home in Columbia for 57 years, John touched many lives, providing lasting memories to those in his church community who as friends in faith were so important in his life, golfing partners of 40 years fishing buddies throughout the state and every stranger ever met.
As a veteran of World War II, having served in Patton’s 737 Spearheaders Tank Battalion, his passing reminds us that another member of the “Greatest Generation,” who endured and gave so much has been lost. The depth of our admiration and appreciation is immeasurable. John was the kindest of souls, loved by his entire family and will be greatly missed.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 at 11:00 am at Calvary Baptist Church, 606 Ridgeway Avenue, Columbia, MO with Visitation from 10:00 am until service time. Entombment will be at Memorial Cemetery.
