Dr. John Kirtus Tarwater, 73, of Columbia, Missouri, formerly of Harrisonville, Missouri, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2025, in Columbia. He was born September 4, 1951, in Lexington, Missouri, to the late Howard and Nettie (King) Tarwater.
John graduated from Richmond High School with the Class of 1969. Following high school, he pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri in Columbia. He then continued his education at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Dentistry, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1978.
John had a deep passion for dentistry, a profession he found both rewarding and fulfilling. He owned and operated a successful private practice for many years prior to his retirement. From 1982 to 1984, he also served as a captain in the United States Army Reserve Dental Corps, demonstrating his commitment to both his country and his profession.
John married Kristine “Kristy” Russell on May 20, 1972, in Richmond, Missouri, and she survives of the home. Also surviving are his children, Kurt Tarwater and wife Kristen of Columbia, Missouri, and Brooke Tarwater and her significant other Chris of Kirkwood, Missouri; six beloved grandchildren: Henley, Anderson, and Harper Tarwater, and Jack, Henry, and Grace Lunt; a brother, Dan Tarwater and wife Estel of Henderson, Nevada; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many dear friends.
John was often called a dog whisperer, known for his deep love and connection with the family dogs—most recently, his inseparable pal, Buddy. A lifelong sports enthusiast and avid golfer, John also had a passion for photography. But above all, his greatest joy came from the time he spent with his family, especially his beloved grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tunnel to Towers, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, or a Charity of your choice.
