Dorah Belle Holmes, affectionately known to family and friends as “Granny Door Bell and Granny Bell,” passed from this life to Heaven on January 10, 2021. She was 86 years old. Dorah Belle was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Holmes, whom she was married to for 61 years; her parents, Willie Lewis and Fonnie Thrash Lewis; sister, Nell Rushing (Huey); and brothers, Henry (Bea) Lewis, and James Lewis. Surviving family members include her daughter, Jackie Dillon (Dudley) of Tylertown, MS; a son, Tillman Holmes (Pam) of Kokomo, MS; sister, Dianne Craine (Ralph) of LA; five grandchildren, Jeremy Dillon of Hattiesburg, MS, Wes Dillon (Lindsay) of FL, Dr. Cassie Burns (Trey) of AL, Amy Herrin (Neil) of TN, and Ashley Holmes (Brittany) of Hattiesburg; nine great-grandchildren, Bryce Dillon, Leah Dillon, Wyatt Dillon, Ethan Burns, Caleb Herrin, Lauryn Herrin, Caden Turnage, Roren Holmes, and Landrie Holmes; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lewis. Dorah Belle was a lifelong resident of the Kokomo community. She was a hard worker, devoting around 50 years of service at Rutter Rex, including a position as supervisor for many years. She served her community well. She was the oldest member of Kokomo Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer for a number of years. She loved her church dearly, but loved Jesus more. Her hobbies included crocheting, gardening, and cooking. She enjoyed spending time with all her family, and her joy was contagious. Sundays were always a time for church and a time for fellowship. On any given Sunday, she would cook some of the best food around: fried ribs, biscuits, tomato gravy, fried chicken and okra, jelly cake and chocolate pie, just to name a few. She was known as a peacemaker, which was just one of her Godly qualities. She resembled the Proverbs 31 woman in the Bible. She was noble, worked with her hands, cooked with love, provided for her family, gardened, gave to those in need, was clothed with strength and dignity, was not idle, and was a woman who feared the Lord. Proverbs 31:31 says “Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Although she will be missed dearly, her legacy will live on in those she touched. Her faith is now sight! Praise God for the promise of Heaven to those who trust in Him! A graveside service celebrating Ms. Dorah Belle’s life will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Kokomo Community Cemetery with Reverend Glenn Nace presiding and assisted by Jeremy Dillon, Wes Dillon, Ashley Holmes, Will Lewis, Cole Lewis, and Jason Kessler as pallbearers with her great-grandchildren recognized as honorary pallbearers.
