Vera Y. Broome, age 82 passed away on Monday, May 27, 2024 at her residence in Columbia, MS. She worked more than 30 years at Jefferson Middle School where she retired as cafeteria manager. Ms. Vera was a longtime member of North Columbia Baptist Church and head of the church Hostess Committee. For many years, she gave of herself to ensure her church family felt loved when occasions arose involving fellowship over a meal. Vera was also blessed with a green thumb. She enjoyed gardening and growing her flowers that were often enjoyed by her family and friends. She will be missed and remembered as a kind and sweet mannered lady who would help others in any way she could.
Vera was preceded in death by her husband, James I. Broome, Sr.; son, James I. Broome, Jr.; parents, Burley V. Young, Sr. and Nannie Mae Hunnicut Young; brothers, Burley V. Young, Jr., Hudson Young, and Curtis Young, Sr.; cousins, Sadie Y. Rogers, Linda Y. Harger, and Curtis Young, Jr.; She is survived by her nephews, Bryan Harger (Mary Ann) of Moss Point, MS, and Derek Daigle of Dahlonega, GA; nieces, Charlotte Hibley (Duane) of Columbia, and Darlene Griffin (Beau) of Fairhope, AL; a host of great-nieces, and great-nephews; and special friends, Gilbert and Cheryl Jacobs, and Charles Rogers, Sr.
Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 PM on Friday, May 31, 2024 at North Columbia Baptist Church where family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until service time. Reverend Tommy Stogner will officiate and burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery assisted by Tony Wilks, Duane Hibley, Gilbert Jacobs, Craig Little, Jeff Bass, and Patrick Haynes as pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to North Columbia Baptist Church.
