Alice May Hui

Alice May Ling Hui passed away on April 6, 2026 at the age of 87 in Columbia, South Carolina due to complications from lung cancer. Alice lived a full and active life studying, working, and travelling in multiple countries.

Born on September 26, 1938 in Canton, China to Chan Chiu Wing and Yuen Yuet Oi, Alice moved to Hong Kong as a child and, after the early death of her father, was raised by her mother in one room in a Buddhist temple. Despite humble beginnings and limited opportunities for women at the time, she pursued higher education at the National Taiwan University in Taipei, Taiwan where she studied Chinese literature. After her graduation she was employed at Hang Seng Bank in Hong Kong before she moved to the United States, settling in Columbia, South Carolina in 1973. She was employed at the South Carolina Department of Corrections in their Records Department. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels and, for many years, at Prisma Health Baptist Hospital.

Throughout her life Alice enjoyed travelling around the world with her late husband of 56 years, Wing Hong Hui, close friends, and her children. Memorable journeys included a trip to Russia, travelling along part of the Silk Road, and visits with family in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom. She also enjoyed line dancing and gardening, where she always shared her harvests with friends and neighbors. Alice was a devoted friend who maintained lifelong friendships. She was a doting grandmother and loved spending time with her adored grandchildren. Various activities included cooking lessons, teaching them mah jong, and sharing jokes and mischievous moments.

Alice is survived by her daughters Yvonne Hui (Carrie Phipps), Arlene Hui (Stuart Cocks), and Frances Hui (Robert Cutts), and her beloved grandchildren Sophie, Olivia, and Charlie Cocks and Owen and Miles Cutts.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at MUSC Columbia Downtown for their kindness, compassion, and diligent care. As per Alice’s wishes there will be no funeral service.
