

Born on April 20, 1944, in Savannah, Georgia, A.L. was the beloved son of the late Arthur Gordon Cowart and Rena Lee Cowart.
A Life of Honor and Service
A.L. graduated from Dreher High School before dedicating two decades of his life to the service of his country in the United States Army. He retired as a Captain in the Infantry, earning the Bronze Star for his extraordinary dedication and leadership. As a captain, A.L. led his team through two tours of duty during the Vietnam War without suffering a single casualty—a testament to his skill and devotion to his men. His service continued as he trained cadets, sacrificing his eyesight after a ricochet bullet struck him at the range.
A man defined by his integrity, A.L. lived a life of honor, discipline, and respect. He was known for being sharp, intelligent, and kind. He found immense joy in golf, fishing, playing cards, and spending time with his family. He was a proud member of the "Hole-in-One Club," having sunk his famous shot in '83. He had a legendary ability to "see" the world despite his blindness, always proving how well he was truly connected to the people and life around him.
Family
A.L. is survived by his cherished wife of 19 years, Regina Burks Cowart.
He leaves behind his loving children: Michelle Lori Serrano; Michael Todd Cowart and his wife, Anita Cowart; Becky Ann Hayes and her husband, Peter V. Hayes; Charles Jonathan Cowart; Ted Giuliano (TJ); Christina Marie D’Eredita; and Michael Giuliano. He was also blessed with 15 grand children and seventeen great-grandchildren.
A.L. was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Gordon Cowart and Rena Lee Cowart; his sisters, Brenda Gail Stevens and Linda Renee Cowart; and his brothers, Gordon Charles Cowart and Wayne Lewis Cowart. He is also survived by his devoted sister, Rev. Diane Cowart Parker.
Service Information
A visitation will be held on Monday, December 29, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Dunbar Funeral Home, 4219 Hardscrabble Rd.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, at 12:30 PM at Dunbar Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery located at 4170 Percival Rd.
