Don was born in Port Jervis, NY, to Leah Curtis-Perry and the late Donald R Perry. Don graduated from Minisink Valley Central School District and then from SUNY-Brockport where he obtained a degree in Teaching. While at Brockport, Don was a multi-sport athlete. He was a starting player on his college football team, and he was the State champion in the javelin in 1968, throwing a record-breaking distance. His most important accomplishment at Brockport was marrying his wife of 55 years, Susan McCarthy.
Upon graduation, he returned to Minisink Valley as a teacher. His career spanned over 30 years. He also coached Track and Field and Cross Country at Minisink.
Don enjoyed camping, RVing, hiking, golf, softball and reminding his children of his javelin record. He was an avid sports fan and remained loyal to the New York Mets regardless of their record. Don also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. He was their biggest fan, often attending many swim meets, baseball and softball games, cross country meets, band concerts, lacrosse matches, and soccer games. His love of his children and grandchildren was obvious to all.
Don is survived by his wife, Sue; his daughter, Kelly Lee Perry of La Crescenta, CA; his son, Donald Lee Perry II and his wife Vickie of Columbia, SC; Don and Vickie’s children – Megan Elizabeth and Aidan Jackson; his mother, Leah Perry of Port Jervis, NY; his brother, Roger Perry, and wife Nora of Port Jervis, NY; his sister, Deborah Steinberg and her husband Ralph Steinberg of Phoenix, AZ.
